In 2019, I was invited by the Latvian publisher kuš! to publish a solo comic for their celebrated comic book series mini-kuš!, loosely based on the theme “Modern Heroes.” Violent Delights was the result, in which I stepped away from the digital techniques used on my previous contributions to kuš!’s anthology š! (š! '22 ‘Fashion’ and š! 25 ‘Gaijin Magaka’) and embraced the traditional medium of drawing on paper. A kind of Hetamoé manifesto, this comic book brings together and confronts various cultural, temporal and aesthetic scales—the languages of the avant-garde or literary critique and of "low" pop culture (e.g. anime, emoticons), words from the past and words from the present/future, big data and tiny things, science and art, among others—to weave an immersive reflection on a classic but urgent dilemma: Eros and Thanatos, ecstasy and violence (inflicted by humans against each other and by humans against the planet) as the keys to understanding the tragedy of our contemporary condition. When things fall apart, creativity and art face a test of their historical role and redeeming grace.

This is the comic’s synopsis: “Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet prompts this exploration of the intimate as the Other. Pictures draw us to behold and snuggle into them, only to wield their subsemiotic powers counter to interpretation. Performing this extimité in the art realm can help us grasp the many cultural-ecological disasters of our time.”

Em 2019, fui convidada pela editora letã kuš! para publicar um trabalho a solo para a sua célebre coleção de pequenos livros banda desenhada Mini-kuš!, que se baseia livremente no tema “Heróis Modernos”. Violent Delights foi o resultado, no qual me afastei das tecnicas digitais usadas nas minhas anteriores contribuições para a antologia š!’ da kuš! (š! 22 ‘Fashion’ e š! 25 ‘Gaijin Magaka’) e abracei o meio tradicional do desenho sobre papel. Uma espécie de manifesto Hetamoé, esta banda desenhada conjuga e confronta diversas escalas culturais, temporais e estéticas—as linguagens do avant-garde ou da crítica literária e da "baixa" cultura pop (por exemplo, anime, emoticons), palavras do passado e palavras do presente/futuro, big data e coisas minúsculas, ciência e arte, entre outros—para tecer uma reflexão imersiva sobre um dilema clássico mas urgente: Eros e Thanatos, êxtase e violência (infligida pelos humanos uns contra os outros e pelos humanos contra o planeta) como as chaves para compreender a tragédia da nossa condição contemporânea. Quando as coisas se desmoronam, a criatividade e a arte enfrentam um teste ao seu papel histórico e graça redentora.

Eis a sinopse de Violent Delights: “A tragédia romântica de Shakespeare, Romeu e Julieta, suscita esta exploração do íntimo enquanto Outro. As imagens chamam-nos a contemplá-las e a aconchegarmo-nos nelas, apenas para exercerem os seus poderes subsemióticos contra a interpretação. A encenação desta ‘extimidade’ no domínio da arte poderá ajudar-nos a lidar com os múltiplos desastres culturais-ecológicos do nosso tempo.”
