“Imagine a parallel dimension in which a whole generation was raised on Sailor Moon for breakfast”. This is the motto for issue #25 of š!, a celebrated comics anthology published by kuš!, dedicated to the theme “gaijin mangaka”, i.e., a global movement of artists working in experimental visual narratives who are influenced by Japanese comics.

My entry, “Trace Dream Techno”, offers 14 pages + omake at the rate of one panel per page, repeating the anthology’s trademark pocket-sized format, while echoing the bold colors and nostalgic “picture book” feel of early manga like Makoto Takahashi’s Sakura Namiki. Three levels of meaning erupt from this comic—picture, text and kaomoji (Japanese emoticons)—which interlace to create a sensuous sequentially, loosely working within the recognizable frame of “mangaesque” aesthetic, formats and material culture to achieve an uncanny effect. A sense of impending doom, off-screen violence, and voyeuristic desires in the confessional style of “Teen-Girl Tumblr Aesthetics” complete my contribution, which has been described as a form of “primal rage therapy.”

“Imaginem uma dimensão paralela em que toda uma geração foi criada com Sailor Moon ao pequeno-almoço.” Este foi o mote do vigésimo quinto número da revista š!, uma célebre antologia de BD publicada pela kuš!, dedicada ao tema gaijin mangaka, ou seja, um movimento global de artistas que trabalham em narrativas visuais experimentais influenciados pela banda desenhada japonesa.

“Trance Dream Techno” é uma história de 14 páginas + omake ao ritmo de uma vinheta por página, repetindo tautologicamente o formato de bolso pelo qual a antologia é conhecida, ao mesmo tempo que ecoa as cores fortes e sentimento nostálgico de “livro ilustrado” que encontramos em exemplos iniciais de shoujo manga, como Sakura Namiki. Três níveis de significado  ̶  imagem, texto e kaomoji (emoticons japoneses)  ̶ interlaçam-se para criar uma sequencialidade sensual, trabalhando livremente dentro do enquadramento reconhecível da estética, formatos e cultura visual do manga para atingir um enfeito inquietante. Uma sensação de desgraça iminente, violência fora de cena, desejos voyeuristas no tom confessional da Teen-Girl Tumblr Aesthetics rematam esta minha contribuição, que já foi descrita como “terapia de raiva primordial”.
