in THE LAST MATCH, a traveling exhibition by KUŠ! +

Burnt Kitty and Fire, 2017.

Acrylic and collage on matchbox sized paper.

“Since 2009 the Latvian comics magazine kuš! invites international illustrators and comics artists to draw their interpretations of “the last match” on a paper snip in the size of barely 0,00166 m2. Like this the little artworks can easily be collected in just a few matchboxes. When exhibited the collected drawings are taken out of the boxes and hung chronologically on matchsticks hung in a matrix, so you can see which artist is behind each work. The result shows you can make something big out of something small, also during times of financial crisis.” Read more about it here.

My contributions to kuš!’s travelling exhibition, The Last Match. On the right, “火,” meaning “fire,” is a collage in which a fragment of a cute mangaesque girl reaches beyond herself, to the the acrylic background in bright red, partially covering the hole. On the left “Burnt Hello Kitty,” in which I shaped the tiny piece of paper to match the recognizable outlines of Sanrio’s Hello Kitty; the paper was then roughly painted with acrylic paint.

“Desde 2009, a revista de banda desenhada letã kuš! convida ilustradores internacionais e artistas de BD a desenhar as suas interpretações do “last match” num papel de apenas 0,00166 m2. Assim, as pequenas obras de arte podem ser facilmente coletadas em algumas caixas de fósforos. Quando exibidos, os desenhos são retirados das caixas e pendurados cronologicamente em palitos de fósforos pendurados numa matriz, para que se possa ver que artista está por trás de cada trabalho. O resultado mostra que se pode fazer algo grande com algo pequeno, mesmo em tempos de crise financeira.” Ler mais aqui.

As minhas contribuições foram, à direita, “火”, que significa “fogo”, uma colagem em que o fragmento de uma menina de mangá se estende para além de si mesma, até o fundo de acrílico em vermelho brilhante, cobrindo parcialmente o buraco. À esquerda, “Burnt Hello Kitty”, em que recortei o pequeno pedaço de papel à imagem dos contornos reconhecíveis da Hello Kitty da Sanrio; o papel foi depois pintado também com tinta acrílica.
