A short comic about my field trip to an abandoned asbestos factory in the city of Ambler, Pennsylvania, in the United States, during the Anthropocene Campus Philadelphia in 2017. Once the proud world capital of asbestos, Ambler plunged into a deep recession in the 1970s after bans came into action. Since then, Ambler has been battling the toxic legacy of asbestos, which includes a high incidence of lung cancer among the population. I sought to reflect both the information presented at the old asbestos factory (now converted into a green office building) and the experience of navigating the Superfund sites in Ambler, including a rehabilitated location with a pond that serves as a habitat for birds and aquatic animals. Past and present, landscape and detail, signs and humans (the other ACP participants) are entangled for this purpose. The sound of our restless, greedy cameras makes itself heard— click, click, click. A hopeful sun shines on these new ecosystems, but the many textual warnings scattered along the way interrupt them (CAUTION, HAZARDOUS), like a trauma that refuses to be mitigated.

Outrora a orgulhosa capital mundial do amianto, Ambler mergulhou numa profunda recessão nos anos setenta, após entrarem em vigor proibições sobre este material. Desde então, Ambler tem lutado contra o legado tóxico do amianto, que inclui uma alta incidência de cancro do pulmão entre a população. Na BD, procurei refletir tanto a informações apresentada na antiga fábrica de amianto (agora convertida num prédio verde com escritórios) como a experiência de percorrer os locais do Superfund em Ambler, incluindo um local reabilitado com uma lagoa que serve como habitat para aves e animais aquáticos. Passado e presente, paisagem e detalhes, sinalética e seres humanos (os outros participantes do ACP), entrecruzam-se para esse efeito. Ouve-se o som das nossas câmaras—clique, clique, clique. Um sol esperançoso brilha sobre estes novos ecossistemas, mas os muitos avisos textuais, espalhados pelo percurso, interrompem-nos (CUIDADO, PERIGOSO), como um trauma que recusa ser mitigado.
